13th Nepal Open Final day

2012 February 24
by parakros

The Final day brought with it the best by far conditions for big XC flights, unfortunately due to the closing/prize giving ceremonies the organizers decided on a short task, Sarangot-Greenwall-across the lake and back to landing. Due to the short task I decided to once again place myself at certain points waiting for the gaggle to pass for me to be able to snap some shots.

once again it was great views of the lead gaggle over Toropani.Although a lot of this gaggle broke towards TP1 before entering the start cylinder.

the view of Greenwall from 3450m ASL this being the highest CB I have had at Greewall till now. IMG_0596

and the views that come with the height Winking smile it was pretty amazing punching through the inversion layers and being rewarded with views like these.  seeing that the lead gaggle broke early I decided that ill try to get from greenwall to TP1 and then over the lake, my track says you can do it Smile it was a sight looking west and seeing Robin coming back with a twin engined plane coming up from behind. I had to slightly turn off course to allow him to pass before I continued flying to the Peace Pagoda. IMG_0597IMG_0598IMG_0599IMG_0600IMG_0601IMG_0602IMG_0603IMG_0604IMG_0605IMG_0606

coming back from greenwall I still had surplus altitude.IMG_0611IMG_0615IMG_0616

Final approach I got pretty low, at one point I was checking out which boat looked the most comfortable to crash onto. all that was going through my head was new vario new vario new vario new vario. 1/2 bar and made it with about 15m alti. Ahh the relief.IMG_0617

Even though this was a low key event, we had a massive amount of people register for the different categories I remember someone saying that there were somewhere in the area of 250 people but I would have to go and check that figure.

All I can say to anyone that some day wants to come to Nepal, if you are here during the comp season, sign up and have a blast with a literal soup of national and international pilots. the mixing of cultures is an experience in itself.

Looking forward to the Party tonight and and I will do a final write up summarizing the past 5 days. I will also dump all the photos online. if anyone is interested in a copy of any of the photos just let me know.

The next 3 days I’m a taxi driver, I hope that conditions continue and the RU Open will have even better weather.
